Features

This page provides an overview of the core features offered by shrib.com.

Note-taking

Shrib.com allows you to easily take notes. As soon as you access a new note (by visiting shrib.com or any URL starting with shrib.com), you can start typing to save your note instantly.

Notes are automatically saved to the cloud server as you type. While the free basic version has a slight delay in saving, shrib PRO saves your note instantly with every keystroke.

For added safety, your note is also saved in your browser in case you experience internet connection issues. If the cloud version differs from your local version, you will be prompted to choose between the two.

Furthermore, while you work on your note, no one else can edit it.

[shrib PRO] As a PRO user, you can utilize shrib.com entirely with keyboard shortcuts, which can enhance your productivity and reduce physical strain.

[shrib PRO] As a PRO user, you get to use the AI Assistant. Read all about it here.

Dark Mode

By default, the “dark mode” setting is automatically read from your browser and device. For example, if you have set your smartphone to be in dark mode at night, this propagates right into your shrib.com experience.

The setting can be controlled manually with the darkmode URL parameter:

The setting is stored in your browser for your next visits.

Localization to other languages

The language of shrib.com is selected automatically based on your browser settings. If you would like to choose a different language, you can visit shrib.com with the URL parameter
?language=[Code]
where [Code] is replaced with the language code from the table above.

Example: go to
https://shrib.com?language=es
to get the Spanish localization.

Formatting

The editor for typing notes only supports plain text.

However, you can utilize Markdown to format your text. Once you apply Markdown formatting, you will see a Markdown icon in the left toolbox. By clicking on it, you can switch to a rendered (read-only) version of your note. You can find a Markdown Formatting Cheat Sheet here.

If your note contains internet addresses (links or URLs), you will have a link icon in the left toolbox to switch to a rendered version of the note with active links.

Sharing and Publishing

You can freely share your notes with others to collaborate on the same note. Simply copy and paste the address of your note and use the sharing features available on your device or browser.

Additionally, you can publish notes as read-only web pages.

To access publishing options, click on the globe icon on the right. Here are the different ways to publish a page:

  • Render a note as a web page: You can share a link to your note that appears as a rendered web page. To enable this, append “?v=md” to the note address for Markdown formatting, or “?v=nc” for active links. Note: Visitors can remove these parameters from the address to edit the note.
  • Lock a note as a read-only web page: You can lock a note, preventing others from editing it. In the free basic version, an email address is required to publish a read-only web page. By using the same email address, you can unlock the note for editing while maintaining it as read-only for others.
  • [shrib PRO] Grant read-only access to a private note: PRO users can grant read-only access to private notes by publishing them with additional settings.

You can conveniently transfer a note by using a QR code. Read more about it here.

Downloading

Your note can be downloaded as a reusable text file. Simply click on the download icon in the right toolbox.

[shrib PRO] As a shrib PRO user, you can download all your notes neatly packed into a single ZIP archive.

Printing

Notes can be printed using your browser’s default printing feature (CTRL-P or ⌘-P in most browsers). The app is designed to ensure that your notes are printed in a visually appealing format.

Locking by Encryption

[shrib PRO] With a shrib PRO account, you can individually lock your notes, restricting access to them using a password.

To lock a note:

  1. Open the desired note.
  2. Access the “Settings” panel (Alt-S keyboard shortcut).
  3. Select “Lock Note”.
  4. Follow the instructions to set the password.
  5. Done.

Some important points to remember about locked notes:

  • Without the password, the note cannot be decrypted. If you forget the password, the note will be permanently inaccessible. Additionally, using a simple password makes it easier for others to guess.
  • Synchronization to the cloud may have delays due to the on-the-fly encryption overhead. Therefore, ensure that the checkmark appears in the upper right corner before closing the browser.
  • When downloading an individually locked note, only the plain text version can be downloaded.
  • The zip archive backup of your account includes a browser-based unlocking tool to unlock the notes using the password. Therefore, your locked notes are safely stored in the zip archive, making you independent of shrib.com, the internet, or civilization.
  • The password is stored in your browser session memory (RAM) and is never written to any device storage or shared across the cloud by shrib.com.
  • If the same password is used for multiple notes within your account, it only needs to be entered once per reload.
  • While we have taken utmost care to ensure the security of your plain text and password, technology is never 100% infallible. If you discover any security issues, please notify us immediately.
  • Encryption is performed using the AES encryption standard built into modern browsers (Crypto Web API).
